Neuropsychology Services

Neuropsychology is a specialized area of healthcare that serves as a junction to assess medical and mental health concerns, typically arising concurrently. Often individuals have concerns about brain function such as:

  •  memory complaints

  • stroke

  • movement disorders

  • attention difficulties

  • brain injuries

  • Influence of anxiety, trauma, mood challenges and/or other psychological stressors

Individuals may seek services if they suspect recent or ongoing changes in cognitive, behavioral, and/or emotional functioning. They may also seek services necessary for presurgical evaluations. Neuropsychological services assess various thinking skills, such as:

  • memory

  • spatial integration

  • problem-solving skills

  •  language abilities

  • possible impact of psychological concerns that may, understandably so, be influencing wellbeing

In some circumstances, it is important to disentangle other potential issues that may be exacerbating concerns such as cardiovascular or environmental factors. Comprehensive evaluations are completed to assess cognitive strengths and weaknesses related to cognitive functioning, medical complexities, and mental health functioning. These evaluations can provide diagnostic clarity about what is causing symptoms, such as:

  • dementia

  • mild cognitive impairment

  • stroke

  • traumatic brain injury

  • healthy normal aging or more

This service includes intentional collaboration with the individual, the individual’s loved ones and their medical providers to ensure diagnostic clarity for integrated treatment planning. Evaluations are often helpful to the individual and their loved ones to better understand symptom etiology and treatment planning in a holistic manner. Regardless of diagnostic outcome, treatment planning optimizes cognitive capacity and behavioral choices to increase a sense of agency towards cultivating a meaningful quality of life.

  • What is the purpose of a neuropsychological evaluation?
There is usually a question about an individual’s cognitive functioning (memory, attention, processing speed, etc.) brought up by the patient or noticed by loved ones. A neuropsychological evaluation can assess these areas of cognition and help determine the cause of change. There are many possible reasons for cognitive changes. Some examples of reasons include the presence of a previously diagnosed neurologic disorder (such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke), presence of psychiatric and/or medical conditions, or even just typical normal aging. It is also possible that there may be new neurologic processes setting in (such as possible Alzheimer’s, progressive aphasias, or frontotemporal degeneration).
  • How long does a neuropsychological evaluation take?
Typically from start to finish, evaluations will take 10-14 days to complete. There are three appointments associated with our clinic’s neuropsychological evaluation process: The first appointment is a clinical interview via telehealth, which will be an opportunity for the patient and/or family members or friends to describe their experiences and address concerns. Other pertinent information will be collected at this appointment, such as education and occupational background, understanding past or current life stressors, discussing medical and surgical history, and other important factors that are relevant to brain functioning (past and current substance use, history of head injuries, quality and quantity of sleep). This appointment is scheduled for one hour. The second appointment (which is typically scheduled the same week as the interview) will be in-person to complete the testing. Testing includes symptom and neurobehavioral questionnaires (by patients, and collateral informants if available), paper-pencil testing, and computer testing (if required). This appointment will range in time, depending on the referral and can range from a few hours to all all-day evaluation. Additional testing sessions will be added if necessary. Due to test security, we cannot disclose the tests used, nor can we transmit raw data to the patient or third parties. No third-party observers are allowed in the actual administration of tests (paper-pencil, computerized testing). The final appointment is providing feedback about the results of the evaluation. This will typically occur the following week of the testing appointment. The neuropsychologist will review results and provide recommendations based on the results. Family members and loved ones are welcome to attend this telehealth visit if given verbal consent by the patient.
  • Why does it take so long?
The neuropsychologist will be writing a 10–20-page report with all the information collected during the visits. In addition to report writing, there are many hours of scoring, interpretation, and consultation (when needed) that go into the finalized report. The total time per patient is typically 10-12 hour, on average; however, more complicated, and more involved cases can take 14-16+ hours to complete.
  • Can I self-refer for a neuropsychological evaluation?
To ensure continuity of care, a referral is needed for a neuropsychological evaluation. Once the testing and report has been complete, the referring provider will be sent a copy of the report. The referral form can be found here. Please have your treating provider complete and fax this form back to us, along with associated medical documents (required in order to review referrals). We will be reviewing all referrals to ensure appropriateness of referral.
  • Are you completing Medical Legal Evaluations?
No, we are not currently taking any Med Legal cases. This is subject to change in the future.

Individual Therapy:

Sometimes there may be specific experiences or stressors that are driving you to seek therapy. Other times you may feel particularly heavy or unclear or just like something is off in your life though you can’t quite articulate it or make sense of it (yet). Individual therapy creates an intentional space to cultivate awareness and skills to expand your capacity to be with and transform suffering while awakening to your innate strengths and potential.

It takes great courage, strength and humility to face uncertainty and distress and to seek clarity and healing. Individual therapy is undoubtedly hard work—it is an investment into your wellbeing and quality of your life and relationships. We integrate evidence-based mental health practices with flexibility that incorporates unique individual and cultural factors through a holistic and integrated approach.

Therapeutic approach and treatment, length of therapy, and other factors may be discussed during the phone consultation. If you are interested in getting connected to individual therapy services please complete form below.

I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Evaluation

Many adults have questions about whether they have ADHD – it is one of the most common referral questions from medical providers. The prevalence of ADHD in the United States has risen over recent years in both children and adults. This may be due to increased social media awareness, acceptability of mental health difficulties, changes in daily routine secondary to COVID-19, and/or major changes impacting an individual’s life. These additive stressors may reduce the effectiveness of long-used compensatory strategies.

The ADHD Evaluation assesses adults who have questions about ADHD. This evaluation is dedicated to only assessing the presence or absence of ADHD; it is not a comprehensive psychodiagnostic evaluation addressing alternative diagnoses (e.g., autism spectrum, complex or posttraumatic stress disorder). If the evaluation determines other diagnoses are possible, either concurrently or independently, additional psychodiagnostic testing will be recommended. Please note ADHD evaluation services are provided for adults 18 years or older.

Please contact us at 503-862-8310 if you are interested in an ADHD-only clinical evaluation to discuss the scheduling and testing process.
